Welsh Authorities Investigate Match-Fixing Allegations in Cymru Premier League

Welsh authorities apprehended ten individuals for alleged involvement in match manipulation during a Cymru Premier fixture last season.

Following the Football Association of Wales (FAW) referral to the Gambling Commission’s Sports Betting Intelligence Unit, South Wales Police received information regarding unusual wagering activity surrounding the April 9th match between Holyhead Hotspur and Barry Town United.

An ongoing investigation by the South Wales Police Economic Crime Unit resulted in the detainment of seven males and three females. However, no specific details regarding their purported link to the game were disclosed, nor were any athletes implicated in any misconduct.

“These apprehensions stem from a comprehensive evidence collection process and close collaboration between the Football Association of Wales, South Wales Police, and the Gambling Commission,” stated Jonathan Ford, FAW CEO.

“The FAW remains dedicated to our integrity education program, implemented in 2014, and our current monitoring and reporting systems, which have contributed to these arrests.”

“While the police investigation is ongoing, the FAW will not be issuing further comments about any individuals.”

ESSA, the organization representing sports betting providers, reported five suspicious alerts related to football during the initial six months of 2016.
