Graduate or Not? Bingo Ad Banned for Appealing to Youth

Joyful Feline Lotto, a wagering enterprise, faced scrutiny from the UK’s advertising regulatory body. Their televised promotion showcased a youthful male who appeared quite young, potentially below the age of 25. The issue stems from strict regulations in the UK regarding the portrayal of young individuals in advertisements for activities like betting.

The commercial displayed this man expressing his enthusiasm for playing bingo, even incorporating the term “Graduate” on the screen beside him, implying recent university completion. This led viewers to believe he was undoubtedly under 25, a significant breach of gambling advertising guidelines.

Within the UK, individuals appearing younger than 25 are required to provide identification to verify their legal gambling age. The advertising authorities perceived the man in the advertisement as noticeably uneasy, utilizing terms like “clearly” and “sort of” in a manner that furthered his youthful impression. Essentially, they concluded that Joyful Feline Lotto was attempting to appeal to a younger demographic with their advertisement, a prohibited practice.

Despite Happy Tiger Bingo presenting evidence that their advertisement featured a performer aged 25 or older, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) remained unconvinced. The ASA asserted that observers couldn’t definitively determine the performer’s age based solely on visual assessment.

Consequently, the ASA prohibited the advertisement and instructed Happy Tiger Bingo to exclusively cast performers who demonstrably appear to be over 25 in subsequent marketing efforts.
