Australian Media Watchdog Cracks Down on Illegal Online Poker Operators

The Australian media watchdog, ACMA, has initiated legal proceedings against several poker providers operating within the country. These providers, including individuals such as Rhys Edward Jones and Brenton Lee Buttigieg, along with an entity known as Diverse Link Pty Ltd, are alleged to have operated unauthorized online poker platforms.

These platforms, operating under names like PPPfish, Shuffle Gaming, and Redraw Poker, purportedly provided real-money poker games to Australian residents from March 2020 until recently. Participants could allegedly purchase chips through methods such as bank transfers or Bitcoin, utilize these chips to engage in poker, and subsequently convert their winnings back into cash or Bitcoin.

The ACMA is pursuing significant financial penalties against the parties involved, with individuals potentially facing fines of up to AUD 1.7 million.

Every infraction of the regulations will result in a $2 million Australian dollar penalty, with corporations facing penalties of up to five times that sum.

The organization tasked with upholding the legislation prohibiting the provision or advertisement of unlawful interactive wagering activities within Australia has indicated that they will not be providing any additional remarks presently, as the issue is currently under judicial consideration.
