Crown Resorts Seeks Clarity on Proposed EGM Levy Hike in Victoria

Crown Resorts Limited has released a communication requesting additional explanation from the Victorian Government concerning suggested modifications to the levy rates for electronic gaming machines (EGMs) at its Melbourne gaming establishment. In essence, the administration desires a larger portion, and Crown believes it’s excessive, particularly given the significant impact of the global health crisis on their operations.

In the previous month, the Victorian Government revealed intentions to elevate the levy rate on these devices at Crown Melbourne, effective July 1, 2023. The government projects that this alteration will yield up to an extra AUD$30 million (US$21.3 million) in yearly income for the state. This levy proposition is an element of a wider declaration by the Andrews Labor Government regarding the future of the casino operator. The government emphasized that its aim is to “guarantee casino operators in Victoria maintain the utmost standards of probity to ensure the errors of the Royal Commission are never replicated.”

Crown, nevertheless, has been in dialogue with the government seeking elucidation on facets of the proposition.

“Based on these conversations, Crown calculates that the effect of the suggested arrangements on Crown Melbourne’s profits would have been roughly $35 million to $40 million annually had they been implemented in FY19 (being the last fiscal year preceding Covid-19),” the operator stated in a communication.

Crown Resorts indicated that the precise effect of the proposed arrangement on forthcoming profits is unknown and contingent upon various elements. These elements encompass the ultimate framework of the arrangement and the income produced by gaming machines at Crown Melbourne.

Furthermore, the corporation declared its aim to cooperate with authorities and establish a collaborative team. This team will be responsible for scrutinizing the proposition’s influence on Crown’s activities. Moreover, they will ascertain the essential legislative measures to execute the government’s recommended revisions.
