The Ontario Gaming and Alcohol Authority (AGCO) imposed a substantial penalty on Apollo Entertainment – a staggering CA$100,000 (approximately US$74,387!). The reason? They significantly neglected their responsible gaming obligations.
Apparently, Apollo wasn’t adhering to the regulations established for internet gambling providers in Ontario. We’re discussing serious lapses, such as neglecting to intervene when gamblers displayed clear signs of distress and failing to implement safeguards like wagering restrictions and self-exclusion mechanisms.
Furthermore, they allegedly didn’t prioritize training their personnel on the significance of responsible gaming or provide them with the tools to assist struggling players. One individual reportedly lost an astounding two million Canadian dollars in under four months, and Apollo remained indifferent.
To their merit, Apollo appears to be treating the AGCO’s conclusions with seriousness and is implementing adjustments to rectify the problems. However, they retain the right to contest the ruling.
The Ontario regulator for alcohol and gambling, the AGCO, has levied financial sanctions against a group of licensed operators for breaches of regulations. These operators retain the option to challenge these rulings through the Licence Appeal Tribunal (LAT), an autonomous judicial entity linked to Ontario’s court framework.
“The AGCO is dedicated to guaranteeing that residents of Ontario can engage in a secure and regulated online gaming environment,” stated Tom Mungham, Chief Executive Officer and Registrar of the AGCO. “This encompasses holding operators responsible for upholding stringent standards of responsible gaming practices.”
Mungham underscored that all registered operators bear the responsibility to proactively observe player conduct, detect indicators of problematic gambling, and implement suitable measures to mitigate potential detriment.
