Crown Perth Casino Workers Cite Mental Health Concerns Amidst Culture of Fear

Workers at the Crown Perth Casino have voiced significant worries regarding their mental health and overall well-being, as per a recent study requested by the Perth Casino Royal Commission. This study emerges at a crucial juncture, as the Royal Commission commences its concluding stage of witness statements to ascertain if Crown Resorts is fit to retain its casino permit.

The study, penned by workplace environment specialist Elizabeth Arzadon, was especially critical of Crown’s work atmosphere. It emphasized a culture where staff felt compelled to prioritize financial gains and client requests over ethical behavior and regulatory adherence. This strain, the study contends, has fostered an environment of apprehension and quiet, leaving personnel feeling powerless to report potential wrongdoings.

These revelations mirror an earlier assessment by Deloitte, which exposed a harmful culture at Crown, where upper management was deemed unreliable and conformity was regularly disregarded in favor of earnings. The Deloitte assessment, grounded in comprehensive staff questionnaires and discussions, discovered that a concerning 55% of Crown Perth personnel lacked assurance that they could voice concerns without encountering adverse repercussions.

The focus now shifts to the Royal Commission to weigh these profoundly troubling discoveries about Crown Perth’s workplace environment as it contemplates the fate of the casino’s license.

Deloittes Victoria Whitaker, in her analysis of Crown Resorts, posits that a genuine cultural transformation within the organization is not a rapid solution – it might require a solid three to five years. Providing evidence at the Royal Commission recently, she stressed, “It truly falls upon Crown’s management and directors to practice what they preach and embody the company’s principles.”
